The success in recent weeks comes from the hand of a British miniseries, Downton Abbey. Unlike other epic series, of which I will speak shortly, and to avail a few deals on amazon, Downton Abbey was created and primarily written by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes. Therefore, we are not facing one of the famous adaptations of classic novels, dominated by the BBC, but with a new script that manages to capture the essence as well as that of these writers even if it's a different era and that we stand at the beginning twentieth century.


Indeed the starting point of the series is April 1912 with the sinking of the Titanic event and ending two years after the onset of WWI. During the seven chapters takes his first season, shows the life of Downton, a manor house where the family lives Crawley and service. The main plot is the search for an heir to the fortune of Crawley and the fiance of one of the daughters died in a tragic accident and there is a clear threat of losing all the properties and that the count has only daughters and no male can succeed him as the law. However, little by little will come out the stories of individual family members and servants leaving the search of the heir in the background.

If there is one word that summarizes this series seen in English, that is change. Not only because of the society was living at that time (The arrival of the phone, feminism or socialism), but the changes that are suffering each of the characters in their love life or his profession. All these changes will cause tensions between generations and between different groups will see the circumstances differently and want to be right. Lies, love, manipulation, friendship, rivalry, friendship will be the compass that will guide the paths of the protagonists. In addition to all frames consquistan you from the beginning, notes that although there is a clear division of social classes, have not wanted to play the trick of the battle between servants and served. Instead, highlight the good relations they have, but never forgetting the positions they hold each other, and still governed by the strict etiquette of the time.


All this is telling masterfully through a great script, great performances and a very well done production. While the script gets that in less than 7 episodes within two years and appreciate the normal evolution of the story and characters, it was clear they wanted to show the story with great scenery and costumes, making and one of the most expensive epic series.


If anything can be blamed for the series is its short duration, and which undoubtedly will be left wanting more. But on the other hand, every time the British show that can develop large plots in a few chapters, forgetting the chapters or fill patterns. However, a couple of chapters would not have been more than enough, right? But not to worry. No second season, scheduled for the last quarter of the year, if my sources are wrong.
